Independent Skills

Independent Skills
When I left the service, nobody handed me a manual on how to civilian. Bills, leases, interviews - it all felt more complicated than any field op. Independent Skills is the program we wish we had back then.

Through our Life Skills Workshops, we sit down with veterans at tables, not behind desks. Together we walk through the nuts and bolts of day-to-day life: budgeting on disability or a tight paycheck, understanding credit, reading a lease so you know what you're signing, how to talk to a landlord, and what your rights are if something goes wrong. We get practical - role-playing tough conversations, practicing phone calls, and breaking big tasks into small, doable steps.

These aren't lectures; they're hands-on, veteran-led sessions where questions are welcomed and nobody is judged for not knowing something. We know what it's like to nod along in an office and then walk out more confused than when you went in. In our rooms, you can say, "I've never done this before," and we'll walk it with you.

Independent Skills also includes focused Housing Search Assistance. We help you look for safe, realistic options that match your income and situation - instead of setting you up for failure with rent you can't sustain. We work side by side on listings, applications, and waitlists, and we talk through transportation, neighborhood safety, and access to work or appointments.

Over time, veterans start to notice the shift. One former infantryman told us, "I used to feel like the world was happening to me. Now I know how to handle it." That's the aim of Independent Skills: not just putting a roof over your head, but giving you the tools and confidence to keep it there, on your terms, for the long haul.
